Tesla Owners: Why a Level 2 Home Charger Is Worth Every Penny

You spent a lot of money on your Tesla. You probably didn't spend much time thinking about how you'd charge it at home.

If you're plugging into a standard 120V wall outlet — what Tesla calls "Level 1" charging — you're getting about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. For most Tesla models, a full charge from empty takes 40 to 60 hours on Level 1. That's not a charging strategy. That's hoping for the best.

Level 1 vs. Level 2: What's the Difference?

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V household outlet. It's slow, it's inconvenient, and it's fine for plug-in hybrids with small batteries — but not for a Tesla with a 75–100 kWh battery pack.

Level 2 charging uses a dedicated 240V circuit — the same voltage as your dryer or electric range. A Level 2 charger delivers 25 to 44 miles of range per hour, depending on the charger and your Tesla model. A full charge overnight, every night, no matter how much you drove that day.

What Does a Level 2 Install Cost in Houston?

• Standard install: $599 — covers most homes where the panel is close to the garage
• Long-run wiring: $899 — for homes where the panel is farther away or the run requires additional conduit
• Panel + EV charger combo: $3,000 — if your panel needs an upgrade to support the new circuit

Do You Need a Panel Upgrade?

Not always. Most modern homes with a 200-amp panel have enough capacity to add a 50-amp EV circuit without any upgrades. During your free estimate, we'll check your panel's available capacity and let you know exactly what's needed.

If your home has an older 100-amp panel or your panel is already near capacity, we'll recommend an upgrade — and we can bundle the panel upgrade and EV charger install into one visit.

Why Hire a Licensed Electrician?

A 240V circuit is not a DIY project. Improper wiring can damage your vehicle's onboard charger, create a fire hazard, or void your Tesla's warranty. In Texas, EV charger installations must be performed by a licensed electrician.
